CHARLES UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES Institute of Economic Studies Essays in Behavioural and Experimental Economics Abstract for Dissertation thesis Author: Mgr. Jindřich Matoušek Study program: Economics and Finance Supervisor: prof. PhDr. Tomáš Havránek, Ph.D. Year of defense: 2022 Abstract The dissertation consists of three papers presenting applications of experimen- tal as well as statistical methods to the topics of behavioural economics. The first paper introduces a series of laboratory experiments in which I apply the experimental methods to a complex decision making problem. The second and third papers present quantitative syntheses of the literature on the classi- cal topics of behavioural economics. The general introduction connects these chapters together. Detailed abstracts for individual papers are presented at the beginning of each chapter. In the first paper, I experimentally examine two complex multi-unit auc- tion mechanisms with an opportunity to communicate and thus collude while comparing these mechanisms in terms of efficiency. Strikingly, allowing for communication increases efficiency in examined auction formats. A cheap-talk collusive agreement resulted in a better allocation compared to the treatments without communication. I hypothesize that complex auction formats makes...
How effective are subsidies for electric vehicles? An evaluation of Czech policy
Čekal, Jonáš ; Pleticha, Petr (advisor) ; Ščasný, Milan (referee)
This thesis deals with the effectiveness of Czech electromobility support. First programs to incentivize electric vehicle purchases were introduced by two Czech ministries in 2016 with grants available until the end of 2021. To estimate the effect of Czech incentives on electric vehicle sales, generalized difference-in- differences design is used. The estimation employs two-way fixed effects model with annual and monthly data spanning over 2015-2021. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland were chosen to serve as a control group with electric vehicle market share and electric vehicle registrations as the dependent vari- ables. The results are ambiguous and do not suggest a clear link between the investigated variables and the subsidies. A more detailed dataset would be needed to conduct a definitive impact evaluation. JEL Classification O31, O38, R40, H25 Keywords Electromobility, Incentives, Subsidies, Rebates, Policy evaluation Title How effective are subsidies for electric vehicles? An evaluation of Czech policy
Incentives for Blood Donation in the Czech Republic: Case Study of Prague
Bošková, Aneta ; Chadimová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Pertold-Gebicka, Barbara (referee)
Blood shortages prompt policymakers to find ways to increase the supply of blood to meet the health sector's demand. The aim of this thesis was to exam- ine the effects of selected incentives on blood donation. Using a questionnaire for blood donors, the data was collected at a transfusion station in Prague. The questionnaire focused on hypothetical choices of donors when offered a certain type of incentive. The probit model and linear probability model were cho- sen for analysing the hypothetical effects of incentives and determining the donors' significant characteristics. The results showed that the vast majority of respondents would donate as often as they currently do with any of the selected incentives. A small proportion of donors would, however, respond to the incentives. The financial incentive or small gifts would discourage a cer- tain proportion of donors; on the other hand, offering a voucher to pharmacy would motivate a small proportion of donors. Both probit and linear probabil- ity model revealed several important donor characteristics that affect attitudes towards incentives. One of the most significant characteristics was gender; the financial incentive would discourage women significantly more than men. JEL Classification A13, D64, D90, O31 Keywords incentives, blood donation,...
